  • Book J.C. Holdway and A Dopo early. Both these restaurants are insanely popular on weekends. A week is best. Two weeks is better.
  • If you want the chipotle cream cheese, get to Matt Robb’s before 10. He sells out. I was there. To get the Chipotle cream cheese, be there by 9.
  • Park once, walk everywhere downtown. Walk the Square, the Gay and the Old City, all within 15 minutes. I would recommend Market Square Garage or State Street Garage.
  • Tuesday deals are real. Not Watson’s has $3 beers. Several places have crazy good deals on Monday, the slowest night for restaurants.
  • Kern’s Food Hall is perfect for groups. You can group up and share different cultures. Korean, Ghanaian, Cuban, Italian, BBQ, all in one building.
  • Don’t skip North and West Knoxville. Wild Love Bakehouse, Paysan Bagels, Magpies Bakery, Bida Saigon, and Yassin’s Falafel House are all outside downtown and all worth the drive.
  • You should keep your eyes open for the North and the West of Knoxville. Aretha Frankenstein has brutal weekend lines. Ruby Sunshine has similar quality and $5 mimosas with shorter waits.
  • The Vault at Vida has a dress code. Not for shorts, sporty clothing or baseball hats. It’s a speakeasy in a bank vault, so it is taken seriously. Plan accordingly.
  • Kern’s Food Hall is the move for picky groups. Some like Korean, others like Ghanaian, still others like pizza? No problem. Dining from vendors and converging at the tables.
  • Saturdays at Market Square Farmers Market are worth waking up for. More than 130 vendors with food and products from May to November from 9 AM-1 PM. Each vendor has fruits, vegetables, honey, fresh bread, and street food. Double Up Food Bucks/EBT SNAP.

Mistakes to Avoid When Eating in Knoxville

  • Do not show up at Matt Robb’s at noon. He opens at 9 AM and routinely sells out by 10:30. This isn’t a bakery. This is one person making biscuits until he runs out. If you miss it, you miss it.
  • Do not skip reservations at J.C. Holdway or A Dopo. These are popular, small spaces. Chancing it on a Friday or Saturday night without a reservation is a long shot. Reserve on Resy or OpenTable a week or more in advance.
  • Do not eat only on Gay Street. Gay Street has so much to offer, but the Old City, Market Square, and most importantly the speciality stores in West and South Knoxville combine to tell the story of Knoxville food.
  • Do not ignore the food halls. Kern’s Bakery Food Hall and Marble City Market are the now of Knoxville food. They have some of the newest and most hilarious restaurants, and you will miss out on much of what is going on if you do not visit.
  • Do not drive when you can walk. There is parking downtown if you can find a garage early. But after that, Gay St to Market Square, then to Old City, is pretty flat walking. It is not worth it in time and money.
  • Do not assume Knoxville is just Southern food. This is the traveller’s biggest sin. They are Southern yes. But Knoxville has some of the best Japanese, Moroccan-Israeli and Jewish delicatessen, Greek, Pan-Latin (Central and South American), Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Ghanaian, and Korean food. When you leave town without trying biscuits and BBQ, you haven’t experienced the best of Knoxville’s food scene.
